Description

Where does Dragon’s Blood come from?

Dragon’s Blood Jasper is found exclusively in Western Australia.  Despite the similarity in name and appearance, it is not to be confused with a healing crystal called Dragonstone found in South Africa.

Mining and Treatments

Dragon’s Blood Jasper was originally mined as a decorative stone within an iron ore mine.  It is currently also sourced from nearby mines which are focused specifically on decorative stones like Dragon’s Blood Jasper and Mookaite Jasper.

All Dragon’s Blood Jaspers are natural, enhanced only by cutting and polishing.

Mineral Family

Dragon’s Blood Jasper is a sedimentary rock and not a true Jasper, which is a silicate mineral.  An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Dragon’s Blood Jasper it is a Chert, a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of micro- or cryptocrysalline quartz.  Chert is usually gray or brown, but occasionally it is green or red, usually due to traces of iron in the sediment.  In this case, the rock’s green coloring is actually from chromium.  When found in its purest form it is a phyllosilicate mineral called Fuchsite. The red inclusions are from pockets of high-iron concentrate in silicate, more commonly known as Red Jasper.
